Akshay Kumar‘s Pad Man is finally here. Covering the topic of menstruation, the movie talks about the efforts of a social entrepreneur Arunachalam Muruganantham who created an affordable sanitary napkin making machine for rural women. The movie was supposed to release on 25th January but is postponed to 9th February.
Pad Man is not a big buzz film but being Akshay Kumar in it who is one of the top superstars of Bollywood, it has got quite a momentum. The film is releasing in around 2300-2500 screens in India. This is a good number to have considering the scope of it. It’s a solo big release of Bollywood this week which gives it enough opportunity to mint strong collections.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat, which was released on 25th January, is still going strong at box office so it is retaining decent numbers in its 3rd week. That’s why Pad Man has got lesser screens than it would have normally got but that is not really a big concern as it is a content driven movie so if audience likes it, the earning will flow easily. There is also Ajay Devgn produced Marathi film Aapla Manus, starring Nana Patekar which has got good screen share in Maharashtra.
At overseas markets, Pad Man will be releasing close to 800-900 screens (approx.). It is also releasing in Russia from today so the screen count may be even more. All in all, 3000+ screens worldwide is ample for Pad Man and more than enough for it to enter into the profitable zone.
Akshay Kumar is a highly consistent box office performer in recent times. Since 2016, all of his movies have been successful and have entered the 100 crore club in India. Pad Man is looking a safe bet as it has a powerful topic and has controlled costs at hand.
Directed by R. Balki, it also stars Sonam Kapoor and Radhika Apte.
