Over the past few years, Indian movies are growing increasingly popular in China and proven to be a potent asset of India’s soft power in a country which remains wary of outside influence. Aamir Khan’s Secret Superstar has caused an explosion at the China box office.
Secret Superstar in 2 weeks is all set to touch the USD $ 80 million marks in China. The movie has earned USD $ 2.82 million on its 2nd Tuesday and now stands at the grand total will be USD $ 79.42 million (509 crores). The movie has crossed the 500 crore mark in just 2 weeks.
Bambawale met Zhang Hongsen, Vice Minister, State Administration of Press Publication Radio Film and TV (SAPPRFT) and discussed cooperation on films and media as a means of strengthening people-to-people contacts, an official statement said.
Last week, in a detailed interview to a Chinese newspaper, Bambawale stressed the need to increased exchanges between filmmakers of both countries.
“China must import more Bollywood films so as to understand India better,” Bambawale had said.
Bollywood movies are catching on in China. Last year, Dangal became the highest-grossing Indian movie in China with revenue of $190 million.
Secret Superstar, which opened this month, has also done well beyond expectations in China, which has a quota for foreign movies release.
Wary of outside influence, China has a quota on the number of overseas movies that can be screened in the country each year. Aamir feels one can’t just determine the success of the film with numbers.
“Box office numbers are just one yardstick about the success of a film. If you see the numbers, we have earned double than the budget of the film. Normally, the film which recover its cost is called a hit, then this film should be called a super hit,” he said.
